STOP looking people because we’ve found him, Dungannon Film Club will be screening Malik Bendjelloul’s Oscar-winning Documentary Searching for Sugar Man on Wednesday 26 February at the Dungannon Art Centres
The Swedish filmmaker’s feature documents the efforts of two South Africans and their attempt to find out more about the mysterious American musician Sixto Rodriguez throughout the late 1990s. Whose music had become widely popular throughout South Africa during a time of huge political change within the country.
While the musician’s music never took off within the United States, he became widely wildly popular throughout South Africa, arguably as big as the likes of The Beatles or Elvis, without little ever being known about him.
At first Stephen ‘Sugar’ Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom only started out to uncover where the royalties for the musician’s music had gone and attempt to discover whether the news of Rodriguez’s supposed death was true or not. Neither would have expected their story to unfold as it eventually did.
In a similar vein to Anvil! The Story of Anvil this fabulous documentary tells a fantastical story that is simply hard to believe and is a hugely uplifting viewing experience, filled with the musician’s wonderful music.
The event kicks off at 7.30pm with tickets for the event £7. Tickets can be purchased from the film club’s official website.
