About The Movie
In Sidney Lumet ‘s lauded satire, veteran news anchor-man Howard Beale (Peter Finch) discovers that he’s being put out to pasture by studio executives due to his failing ratings.
None too happy about the situation Beale threatens to shoot himself on live television and launches into an angry on-air rant; which turns out to be a huge ratings boost for the UBS network. This stunt allows ambitious producer Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway) to develop even more outrageous programming, a concept that she takes to unsettling extremes.
Many critics have claimed Lumet’s film, based on a fantastic screenplay by Paddy Chayefsky, predicted everything about modern media in the 21st Century—from reality TV, YouTube and the tabloid news format. The late Rodger Ebert claimed: “When Chayefsky created Howard Beale, could he have imagined Jerry Springer, Howard Stern, and the World Wrestling Federation?”
