The marketing campaign for Warcraft is already well under way ahead of its release in June later this year. With its deep fantasy mythos, this might just be the film that fills the void left by The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies. Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon and Source Code) Warcraft’s plot will pit human against orc in a tale loosely inspired by Blizzard Entertainment’s hugely successful online role-playing game.
Starring Travis Fimmel (Vikings), Paula Patton (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol), Dominic Cooper (Mammia Mia!) and Toby Kebbell (Dead Man’s Shoes), the film will chronicle two races fighting for survival, sending them on a collision course that threatens their very existence. If the trailers are anything to go by, the visuals look hugely impressive, combining computer generated effects with some stunning prop and costume work.
The CGI heavy visuals could be a turnoff for some but with Duncan Jones writing and directorial skills, we could finally see the first confident video game adaptation that gives this sub-genre the extra live it so desperately needs.
