Coming to us from the work of Kelly Fremon Craig, The Edge of Seventeen (2016), comes this adaptions on from one of the most beloved and cherished novels, Judy Blume’s Are you there God? It’s Me, Margaret has finally  made it to the big screen.

For over 50 years this timeless coming of story has resonated so deeply with us all of in one way or another. This story explores the pains, trials and tribulations of growing up. The story begins with 11 year old Margert being uprooted from her deeply loved family home and straight to New Jersey with her beautifully artistic mother. However, in this move, Margaret is separated from her doting grandmother.

As Margaret settles into the different way of life in New Jersey, she finds friends she can call her own. But, not without fear, our dear Margaret questions her own body image, lack of curves and also lack of periods, compared  to the local girls in New Jersey.  This story is sure to resonate with a large audience, the performances are sweet without fear of being over indulgent.

This film focuses on all growing pains of being a young girl, and settling in for some laughs along the way, Margaret begins to find her own way with God, hoping the lack of experience and other bodily functions will soon come to pass for her.

As the film moves through the motions, the film doesn’t relay on Margaret, but her Mother’s own existential crisis as well. She has a warm smile, and Rachel McAdams make a case for playing such a warm and inviting character.

Verdict

This delightfully innocent and at times often laughable at Bra’s, Period’s and your first kiss,  this adaption is one for the books, balancing both humour and heart. This is sure to be a straight hit for all of the family.
