Join us at the Strand as we screen Jim Sharman’s Shock Treatment, his often-overlooked follow-up to The Rocky Horror Picture Show as part of the BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show season.

Whilst not considered an outright sequel to Rocky Horror, the film does feature several characters from the previous film, mostly portrayed by different actors, as well as several returning cast-members now playing new roles.

The plot sees Brad and Janet (now portrayed by Cliff De Young and Jessica Harper, respectively), head to Denton, a small American town that has been taken over by a television company known as DTV.  The town’s residents are either participants or viewers of the shows and Brad and Janet become contestants on a game show… but wind up as captives instead.

Shock Treatment mightn’t have gained the same cult status a predecessor, but in recent years the film has been re-evaluated by some critics who have seen it as ahead of its time with its views on celebrity culture and reality television.

Screening as part of BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery, BFI Film Audience Network and ICO. www.bfimusicals.co.uk
